Settling-In & Transitions at Kiddicare Nursery

At Kiddicare Nursery, we understand that starting nursery is a significant step for both children and families. Supporting a smooth and positive transition is central to our practice and plays an important role in children’s emotional wellbeing, in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
We work in close partnership with parents and carers to ensure every child feels safe, secure, and confident when joining our setting.

Initial Consultation

Before a child starts nursery, we arrange an initial consultation with parents or carers. This meeting allows us to learn about the child’s individual needs, routines, interests, preferences, and any concerns the family may have. This information helps us plan a settling-in process that is tailored to each child and supports continuity between home and nursery.

Free Settling-In Sessions

We offer free settling-in sessions for all children. These sessions are planned gradually and may include short visits where children explore the nursery environment, meet staff, and take part in activities alongside their parent or carer.
Settling-in arrangements are flexible and may be adapted to meet each child’s individual needs.
During this period, children spend time with their designated key person, who plays a vital role in building a secure relationship and supporting the child’s emotional wellbeing. This approach helps children develop trust, confidence, and a sense of belonging within the nursery.
As part of the settling-in process, children may also take part in an “All About Me” activity, helping staff and peers get to know them and supporting early communication, confidence, and social interaction.

Ongoing Support & Communication

Settling-in is not limited to the first few days. We provide ongoing support and communication throughout a child’s time at Kiddicare Nursery. Parents are encouraged to share updates, ask questions, and raise any concerns at any time.
We understand that separation can be challenging for some children and parents, and staff offer reassurance and support throughout this process. By maintaining open and honest communication, we ensure children continue to feel supported and families feel confident and reassured.

Staff-to-Child Ratios

Kiddicare Nursery meets and, where possible, exceeds EYFS statutory staff-to-child ratios, ensuring children receive high-quality care and attention:
  • Babies: 1:3
  • Toddlers: 1:5
  • Preschool: 1:8
These ratios support children’s safety, wellbeing, and individual development.
